Hello All,
Welcome to my 8-point blog!
Just a quick introduction so we can get to know each other.
I am very passionate about the biological sciences.
Simply put, the human body fascinates the *heck* outtah me! (excuse the language…smile)
Our bodies are remarkable feats of biological engineering, rife with...
1. Automatic on and off switches (e.g., the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems)
2. Electrical Wiring (Sensory and Motor Nerves)
3. Pumps and Hydraulics (Heart and Blood Vessels)
4. Waste Disposal and Recycling Depots (Lungs and Kidneys)
5. Trash Chutes (Lymph Nodes and Lymphatics)
6. A Thermostat (Hypothalamus)
7. "Clean' Fuels (Glucose + O2 = waste CO2 + H2O + ATP as energy) and even...
8. An Army that defends us against Invaders! (Skin, Lungs, and Immune system)
But the marvels and complexities of the human body can also be its downfall.
To work at its optimum level, our body must be in balance (homeostasis) and many mechanisms, and even redundancies, work together to ensure and maintain this intricate, often delicate balance.
Unfortunately, diseases can occur when imbalances in one or more systems occur.
An all too common example is Diabetes which occurs when insulin levels decline so that blood glucose levels remain too high in the blood (Type I = Insulin-dependent = Juvenile Diabetes), or when insulin itself and/or the receptors for insulin become 'old' and the body no longer recognizes or reacts to insulin's presence (= Type II = Insulin-resistant = Adult-Onset Diabetes).
Diseases like diabetes and obesity are now known underlying causes for other deadly disease like heart disease, certain cancers, and age-related neurological disorders like Alzheimer's. For example, it is now fact that scientists can simply measure the Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) of an individual and predict with almost complete accuracy the chances of someone developing diabetes in __ years or even dying of Alzheimer’s by the age of __.
Now some of you may read this and become alarmed or even fearful. Allowed me to shift that mindset paradigm a bit with this logic ... Once a problem is identified ... It is easier to fix!
My goal for this blog, for you, for the world ... Let's beat these diseases before they get us too early and in the prime of our lives!
So … Here's to an active lifespan of 80 plus!
